STUDY IN CANADA AS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT
Canada offers various post secondary programs for International students. They are as follows:
- Certifications which range from 6months to one year.
- Diploma program which is 2 years duration.
- Advanced diploma which is 3 years duration.
- Bachelor’s degree which is 4 years duration.
- Post graduate diploma which ranges from one year to 2 years duration.
- Masters degree which ranges from one year to 2 years duration.
- PhD programs which range from 3 years to 4 years duration.
WHO ARE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS?
These are students who come in from other countries outside Canada to study and get a certificate.
Canada as a country operates different Post secondary institutions for International students. These Post secondary schools are as follows:
Colleges: Programs offered in colleges are Certifications, Diploma, Advanced diploma and Post graduate diploma. Some colleges also work in affiliation with Universities in Canada to offer Bachelor’s degrees.
Universities: Programs offered in Universities are Certifications, Diploma, Bachelor’s degrees, Post graduate diploma, Masters degree and PhD.

What is a Designated Learning Institution?
These are institutions that have been approved by the Canadian government for International students to study and obtain a Post graduate work permit.
POST GRADUATE WORK PERMIT
This is a work permit obtained at the end of a study program in Canada by International students. It helps international students regularise their stay in Canada.
NOTE: Not all designated learning institutions and not all programs of study make you eligible for the Post Graduation Work Permit.
HOW TO START A STUDY APPLICATION IN CANADA.
Study program in Canada is in two parts, School application and Visa application.
The first step is securing a school application. This is followed by Payment of tuition fees. The tuition fee receipt plays a very vital role in getting a Study Visa.
These are the points to Consider before you start a school application.
Tuition Fees: The tuition fee of schools in Canada depends on the province of study. Provinces like Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia have high tuition fees.
Course of Study: Choosing a course of study in a Canadian school is determined by your previous course of study OR your present career.
Province of Study: The Province of study determines the cost of living which includes the cost of Accomodation. Provinces like Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, NewFoundland, Prince Edward Island are very affordable.
Transcript: You need a transcript to process a post-secondary application especially for those with a previous post-secondary education. For students who are fresh graduates from high school, they need to present a high school certificate.
Language Proficiency: Canada is a bilingual country which means they speak two different languages, English and French. THE POST GRADUATE WORK PERMIT (PGWP)
The post-graduate work permit (PGWP) is a document that allows international students who have graduated from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada to work in Canada on a temporary basis. The PGWP allows you to gain valuable work experience in Canada and may help you qualify for permanent residence in the future. The PGWP is determined by the duration of your study. A two years program gets one a three year PGWP while a One year study program gets one a one year PGWP.
Eligibility for the PGWP are as follows:
- Graduating from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada: To be eligible for a PGWP, you must have completed a program of study at a DLI in Canada and received a written confirmation of graduation, such as a diploma or transcript.
- Applying for a PGWP: Once you have graduated, you can apply for a PGWP online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website or on paper using the appropriate application form. You will need to provide supporting documents, including proof of graduation, a valid passport, and a study permit that is still valid or has expired within the last 90 days.
- Paying the fees: You will need to pay the appropriate fees when you submit your PGWP application. This includes a processing fee and an open work permit holder fee, if applicable.
- Waiting for a decision: After you have submitted your PGWP application, you will need to wait for a decision. It can take several weeks or even months to receive a decision on your application, so it is important to plan ahead and allow plenty of time for processing.
- Receiving your PGWP: If your PGWP application is approved, you will receive a letter of introduction stating that you are eligible for a PGWP. You will then need to present this letter to a border services officer when you arrive in Canada to obtain your PGWP.
- Starting your work: Once you have your PGWP, you will be able to work in Canada for up to three years after you graduate. You can work in any occupation and for any employer, as long as your work is not part-time or casual.

To apply for the PGWP, you must submit an application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) within 90 days of receiving written confirmation that you have completed your program of study. You will need to provide supporting documents, including proof of graduation, proof of your study permit, and a valid passport.
If your application is approved, you will receive a PGWP, which will allow you to work in Canada for up to three years. You can work in any occupation and do not need a job offer to apply. However, you must work for an employer who is authorised to hire foreign workers.
